Re: Harddisks being quiter. It depends on the model you're using. There are always some that are noiser and slower than others. The 30 MB harddisk my 80286 had was slower and noiser than most models before it. To this day, I haven't found a harddisk as slow and noisy as that one. It's far and away the worst one I've ever used. BTW, the computer it accompanied was an Emerson model.

We were expecting snow but it missed us completely. Oh well.

I must say people said the IBM Deskstar was reliable and they were right. I bought it in 1999 and clocked a good 85,000 hours. It has been degrading for months now but I didn't realize just how slow it had gotten. It took some effort to copy and I lost some data but amazingly everything's working. Hard drives sure have gotten quieter in the past 12 years!
