Yes indeed, using a tedious strategy of dungeon-diving for loot to buy items and health with. Once you know their layout, the infamous dungeons are actually a good place to acquire cash.
More recently I tried the direct approach, going straight to the castles and parallel zones. By chance the first two contained the Hyper Armor and Hyper Helmet, so without much investment in health I made it nearly 1/3 of the way through the game. Have to get back to that soon; I've been playing mostly PS2 games lately.
Your question reminded me of a thread that I've had on the back burner for a while now. Maybe it's time to get that cooking.
