I actually did find the source of the problem - it was part of a toolbar I didn't want anyway. It's gone now. :-)

Someone. That sounds ominous. Firefox has an Updater.exe. Same with the Ask toolbar, sometimes offered with Chrome, I've heard. Still, I don't think that they'd run if the browser is closed. Anything unusual in the Task Manager?
