A light mode and dark mode toggle does sound like a sensible idea. Lots of modern websites have them. Looking through Wayback Machine, Vimm's Lair has had the same colour scheme since at least 1999, and the same design except for a font modernisation since about 20 years ago.
Just a recommendation for now, but do computers have black and white options? Might be something you could look into to turn on during your visits to this site. Though I do see where you're coming from so that option would be cool.
