Oddworld PS1 Controller Inputs?

Hi everyone, wondering if anyone can help from experience here. I've downloaded and played successfully plenty of ROMs from Vimm.
Weirdly, I have an identical issue when trying to play both Abe's Oddysee and Exodus on my Retropie 4. It accepts no controller input once I get to the main menu. The intro splash screens can be skipped with the Start button, after that, no response.
I've already ensured my controller is set to the correct controller setting (non Dualshock etc.) and fiddled with different input settings with different types of controllers for ages, and have decided it must be the roms.
I've heard on other message boards this could be because of the bios files, however this is weird as I've downloaded these roms like any other roms which have worked fine. Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated!
