Nintendo DS Buttons Not Working

I downloaded the emulator melonDS on my pc, but when I tried to play games involving the control pad/clicking buttons nothing (using my mouse/clickingbuttons) worked, and I couldn't proceed to play. I am a rookie at downloading emulators, so any help/tips are appreciated. I even tried to change the control setting on config, but it didn't work. How am I supposed to play? Do I need to connect a controller? Would any controller work? TIA
