It indicates that it was a variant of the ROM that was widespread in early piracy circles, e.g. those 100-in-1 NES cartridges, or bootleg carts of popular games usually distributed in regions where the game wasn't officially released like Russia or China. They're mainly kept around for historical value.

Hey! I've always wondered, on some games, there's a (Pirate) at the end of them, and I've always wondered what that means. Would anyone here know? Also, is this the right forum to ask this question in?
