The reason Wii NKit games compress so well is because unlike wbfs they're unhashed and decrypted. Wii games need to be hashed and encrypted to work on hardware. It's a choice between saving a ton of space and bandwidth and having the end user have to do a little work, or using wbfs like you are and the end user doing no extra work.

That seems to be correct, though Gamecube games are supposedly hardware compatible Wii games are not. The process to reconvert them in to full isos on the other hand is practically painless, takes only a minute or so after you've unzipped them.
