Raspberry Pi 3 b+ troubleshoot

Ive had a raspberry pi 3 b+ but i havent been able to get any roms on it with my usb drive. i get my usb drive. i make a folder, connect to the pi, files come up. I get alll the emulators but when i put a rom in their right folder nothing shows in my pi. What am i doing wrong?!
