Split larger files?

Occasionally I get errors when downloading large files. I'll let a download start overnight and come back to a 'server error' message from my browser's downloads page. This is especially noticeable with PS3 games. Would it be possible to split larger archives into smaller, 5GB-ish chunks that we can re-assemble on our end? That would reduce the risk of losing all the progress of downloading because of an error at the end.
