Wii Supercharger asks for portal

Hello,
I downloaded Skylanders Superchargers and Skylanders Swap Force. I am running them on a Wii console. The games run but they complain that the portal is not connected although we do have the portals plugged in to the USB port. Portals do work, tried with a disk.
Any pointers and what could be wrong?
