Re: Coin-op Favorites and Arcade Memories

I actually have two ports with this "missing" level in it. The PC-compatible one is called "Champ Kong", and is DOS-based. IIRC, the web address you can find it is here:

The download link has a "/" replaced with a "\". You'll have to correct this download in your URL text window to get the download to start.

The other port I have is called "The King", formerly known as Donkey King. It's found here:

http://nitros9.lcurtisboyle.com/donkeyking.html

This Donkey Kong area you describe, which in "The King" calls "Jacks", is passed by simply skipping the hammers and climbing up from the left side of the screen. It seems (as least in "The King") that the effective strategy is to get up to the top before the enemies become overwhelming in number. This doesn't do much for your score, of course. :-)

Coins occasionally get stuck in the coin slots of arcade games. Don't know much about the mechanism, but sometimes there would be a few of them stuck in there, yet they didn't block the slot.

Pushing the 'reject' button sometimes resulted in a coin falling into the return trap *or* dropping into the machine and giving the lucky button-pusher a credit.

One time on a Donkey Kong machine I pressed the coin-reject button and

pressed it again...

and kept pressing until it stopped blooping :

That was the first time that I saw The Pie Board (AKA Pie Factory or Cement Factory), the 7th screen in the US arcade version.
The contents of the pans have been referred to as sand, cement, or even coal but it looked like pie to us.

This board was left out of most console ports of DK, including the NES. I hadn't seen this in years and recently set myself the task of reaching it. In that I was successful, but failed to complete the board. Next time...
