FF6 is FF3. In North America, Square didn't release FF2, FF3, or FF5. So the only Final Fantasy games release were 1, then 4 (which was called FF2 in the US), and by the time they got the 6 it was the third Final Fantasy to be released in the US. Thus, it is called FF3, but it's really FF6.
From what I've been told, some of the FF games were skipped (Was it three total?). IIRC, FF3 is in fact an SNES port of FF6.
