Well, the Switch is most likely replacing both the 3DS and the Wii U, so I'd say we got our 3DS "successor" already. Sure, they didn't outright say it's replacing the 3DS (and if I remember correct they also gave the impression the DS wouldn't replace the GBA back then, yet it did) but it just makes sense to assume so right now. Pokémon-wise it's basically confirmed the 3DS wouldn't see more releases other than this month's spin off (Detective Pikachu) and a main series Switch game is planned for 2018-19. Most of the other Nintendo big names will probably be the same. I'd say during the next two years it's very likely we'll see them gradually fade out the 3DS in favor of the Switch, but I can understand if you don't feel sure enough of their exact plans since the Switch is the first time the home console also acts as a handheld... ok, sorry for the long post, I guess time will tell so we can only wait...

I'll consider a DS Vault when the successor to the 3DS is launched.
