One of the last Castlevania Series for the SNES system. I remember it fairly well as a VERY difficult game. Richter always seemed to die so easily in comparison to the other games in the series, lol. The game still presents quite the challenge even to the seasoned players.

Graphics: 9
Probably some of the best graphics I have ever seen on an older console such as the SNES. The detail to the backgrounds and monsters are great. Everything from the flames in the background on the first stage to the pine trees in the night darkness in one of the later stages. The backgrounds and weapons, as well as the enemies, really stand out here.

Sound: 10
The music is typical Castlevania style symphony with a hint of new age techno in some of the stages. It is clear and crisp with an all around good attachment to the levels that it plays on. It is very good I will admit, from the heavy parts in the underground dungeon to the xylophone in the forgotten ruins, it all blends very well.

Gameplay: 8
This game was very tough for me, that's for sure... Richter cant stand many blows from an enemy and he tends to fly back whenever he is hit, making it very difficult to stay on those platforms above the pits all the while avoiding those ever annoying medusa heads. The controls are a bit stiff, but the weapons crash is a great addition. However, I think it should be much more powerful for the amount of hearts it takes.

Overall: 9
Overall, if your looking for a slight twist on the typical Castlevania series and you love a difficult game as well, try it. If you get mad easy and always seem to die by falling into pits, stay away...

First of all, I can't believe no one has written a review about this game! I guess some of you think this was a well known game so it doesn't need a review. Believe it or not, I didn't know about it until I found the ROM on the internet a few years back. Anyway, with that said, this is yet another strong member of the Castlevania family. Not the best by far, but still pretty good. Keep in mind, I've played most of the series.

Graphics: 9
The graphics for this game are really quite good. The monsters, backgrounds, and player sprites are very well done. Think SOTN only in 16 bit instead of 32 bit. If you need to compare the graphics to another game on the system, Demon's Crest would be similar. Overall, excellent work on the graphics.

Sound: 8
Yeah, I know, most people give it a 9. But, I have to say the music isn't as catchy or moody as other games in the series. To put a little perspective on this, even though CV 3 was cheesy 8 bit music, I really thought it was better as far as mood and going with the setting. Super CV 4 I think had a little better music too. Still, the music is very good and well done.

Gameplay: 9
Okay, I actually want to give this an 8.5. Richter is a little more difficult to control than the characters from other CV games. Particularly the jumping. But, still the control is good, once you get used to the difference. One thing that still bugs me, Konami, why did you get rid of the multi-directional whip? This game has good replay value and is actually one of the more challenging games in the series. Fighting Drac at the end is especially difficult. If you make a bad or poorly timed jump, well, you fall into a bottomless pit...

Overall: 9
Overall, definitely worth a play. The gameplay, challenge, and all the things mentioned above really add up to one of the best side scrollers for the system. If you are a fan of the series, like me, this is a must have.
