gameshark GBA cheats not working ;(

I am playing Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories (USA), and I am using GameShark codes that are tagged for North America too, which are listed as compatible with my emulator (mGBA through OpenEmu). And none of the cheat codes work!!! I suck at this game apparently, because I cannot beat Sora's final battle against Replica Riku unassisted, so I need these cheats! Anyone got any ideas what's wrong with me (other than needing to git gud at button mashing through the card-based attack system)? I've used cheats on other titles successfully wit this emulator, so I was wondering if was a problem with this title.
