Recommend some plugins

Posted by Dhaos on .
Shouldn't you tell him which plugins are probably most likely to work? Has there ever been anything better than Pete's DirectX and OpenGL plugins for video?

Process completed on Windows 98 se2, in about an hour. I still have some issues, but I blame my ancient computer. It plays, and that's all the matters. For additional assistance, you can also refer to http://www.epsxe.com/help.php .

STEP ONE, Grabbing The Emulator:
Go to http://www.epsxe.com/download.php and download the newest version of ePSXe for your system.
For windows, it will be called "epsxe170.zip", so extract it to a suitable folder name. I will use "PSFOLDER" to refer to this folder. You can name it whatever you like; I like "PSFOLDER".
ePSXe won't open without the proper BIOS. The BIOS has something to do with copyrighted information within the Playstation. Don't ask me about the technical aspects.

STEP TWO, Grabbing The BIOS:
There's something to do with copyright, so I'm not legally allowed to tell you where to get one. I think it's like posting ROMs: it's "illegal" so legitimate websites ban it, but you can still find them. You are "supposed" to take it from your own Playstation using a GameGenie (or GameShark, or whatever). Or you could *Cough* takeitfromtheinternet *Cough*. If you use Google and search for "SCPH1001.BIN" you may or may not find the necessary SCPH1001.BIN file you are looking for. Place that file into "PSFOLDER" --> "bios" .
(I tried to open the emulator at this point, and got an error: "A required DLL file, ZLIB1.DLL, was not found." So, I downloaded it from http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?zlib1 and placed it into "PSFOLDER" . One website says you might need "wnaspi32.dll"; the same site also provides that DLL. Or, a short trip to Google should set you right, no matter what DLL you need.)

STEP THREE, Grabbing The Plugins:
That page recommends you go to http://www.ngemu.com/ for plugins. http://www.ngemu.com/psx/epsxe.php?action=plugins has way more plugins than you'll ever need. If something goes wrong when you try to use the emulator, try configuring it or downloading a different plugin.
Each link is a zip file. Extract all the files from them to "PSFOLDER" --> "plugins" . You don't have to put the readme files in there, but you can.
Step three-point-five, Configuring The Plugins:
Open ePSXe. I think you should get a prompt-window that will take you through it. If not, click "Config" on the menu bar, then "Wizard Guide" . Pick whatever plugins you want, it probably doesn't matter which ones you pick. If one doesn't work, try another. Try a different configuration. Try reading the readme files.
If you want to select between fullscreen or windowed views, use the video-plugin configuration.
(For example, the default CDrom Plugin was crashing my program, so I used P.E.Op.S. CD-R Driver 1.4 instead. However, don't ask me anything about using the CD-ROM to play PS games, 'cause I don't know and I'm not interested now.)
(You can access any of the "Wizard Guide"s windows individually by clicking on the other options from teh original "Config" menu.)
Take note of the screen with two buttons, "Controller 1" and "Controller 2". You will now configure your keyboard to act as a controller: make sure you don't forget how your keys are set up. You can change key-assignments by clicking on the letter, then pressing the key you want to use. (You cannot use certain keys, like Enter) When you are done, click OK.
If you only play single-player games, click "Controller 2" and see that all the buttons are labeled "None". If not, click "Clear".

STEP FOUR, Grabbing The Games:
Games, or ISOs, are really big. You can imagine, they're on CD, and data CDs hold up to 700 MB each. You could probably put every SNES game in existence on two CDs. (That's a good marketing idea, heh heh heh...)
So, not many sites can afford the bandwidth to let the world download these titans. For your convenience, I've found one such place: http://emuparadise.org/roms/psx/
In ePSXe, go to "File" --> "Run ISO", then select your game. It may take a few seconds to load; be patient.

Remember, when you're putting files into your ePSXe folder or subfolders, don't make any new folders. Just put the files straight in there. You can make a separate folder for your games, if you like.

If you have any other problems or questions, go ahead and ask! Be sure to include as many details as you can (like what files are in what folders, what you did prior to having the problem, etc). Even if I can't answer it, I'd love to look it up.
