People earning money off of other's copyrighted material is a HUGE risk, it opens you up for more lawsuits worth more money. Pretty sure a couple that ran ads on their sight got sued for the likes of 25 million dollars. Not exactly an amount to scoff at, even if it were to be reduced in court.
Well all these bad ideas should certainly thin out the user base and start freeing up some of that bandwidth you feel so entitled to, so I'm not sure why you're so concerned.
I'm also guessing you don't have much idea of what it costs to maintain this site as it exists, or how much it would cost to appreciably expand the bandwidth, or how much people would realistically donate over a prolonged period, nevermind potential liability issues. Your last sentence even indicates you wouldn't even be interested in chipping in yourself, so maybe take a step back and try to get some perspective.
The site's been here 25 years. Trust that ownership is wise enough to keep the ship afloat. And if all the downloading really is that stressful, maybe you could pass the time actually playing some of the games you've acquired instead of worrying so much about digitally hoarding the rest.
