It depends on the system (and often the game as well). It's usually called "copy protection" or "digital rights management", and there are many ways to circumvent it depending on the system you're using. The history of copy protection is a fascinating topic, and it's been going on since home computers first hit the market.

So I have a question. How exactly does a Nintendo system (or any system, really) realize that someone is running a pirated game? Are there like certain markers that the system looks for that aren't present in the pirated copy?
