You are not very informed if you think no one's heard of it. Discord doesn't run a monopoly on chat clients and Matrix certainly doesn't need me to advertise it.

Matrix is not a site. It's a decentralized protocol which means that anyone can host their version of it independently. As contrasted to Discord which is all hosted by one company that includes developers who have been outed as sex perverts.
Emulation would not have gotten this far if it wasn't for free software, so I believe it's hypocritical to use Discord on any capacity. That's just me though.
