How to use mac keyboard for gamecube games?

This is my first time using an emulator on my Mac and I downloaded Dolphin and Paper Mario TTYD, but I'm having trouble with the controls. Under controller settings I clicked keyboard and set them how I would want them but they aren't working and I can't start the game.
