You are thinking of The Legend of Contra Zelda.
Umm.. so the stone tablets thing throws a wrench in there. Lots of games where you are dropped by copter into forests and jungles though. Metal Gear, Contra, Rambo, Ikari Warriors... Bayou Billy? Of those only Rambo and Contra are a sort of platformer but, again, I don't recall and tablets.
Another one might be the Metal Slug series? that's not an NES game but it's the kind of game where (having not played EVERY one of them) some sort of magic tablets showing up isn't too far a stretch. If you come up with anything else I'll keep digging
