Yes, you need to download some virtual drive software. I think windows 10 actually has a built in one. I've used Daemon Tools in the past and it worked quite well.
The external usb drive should work as well (I don't know why it wouldn't)

Is it possible to make it seem like you have discs in to swap between if you don't have a disc drive?
If not, if I bought an external USB one, would this work?
