Found that it's possible to convert my Desmume saves for Melon, and using it is much smoother than Desmume.
The audio is clearer and there's less and sometimes no frame skipping during cutscenes and in 3D environments.
The fast-forward function is a little wacky, but it's been a better experience than Desmume.

its better to just use melonDS now instead, its still updated and is better at just about anything
