You must hang out in different circles I guess. Even here, "gay" is used as a general insult when something is unsatisfactory or sub-par, without any direct connotation towards homosexuality. Obviously, it started from a homophobic mindframe where to be gay is an inadequacy of character; thusly it evolved to take on a larger scope of pertaining to anything that is bad or unfavorable. Now, it is used even by non homophobes in the way that Satan's Blob described. It isn't fair, but that's the reality of it.
It is not "a generic insult", it is an adjective meaning "homosexual" (or "happy" or "frivolous"). To use it as an insult is therefore bigoted. I'm sure you're not a bigot, so don't use it so.
