Could try picking the best version that supports the most games. What do I know, though, I've only been emulating for about a year.

As someone who's been doing a lot of MAME setting-up lately, that would be tricky. There's not just one "arcade" system. Arcade ROMs are usually very specific and have to be tailored to a specific MAME version.

There's also the different subtypes of the same ROM, like merged/split sets, etc.
