I remember back in the very early 2000, possibly even 99, the entire vault was removed and Vimm said it was never coming back. It was back a few weeks later. These crackdowns tend to come in waves every so often and after enough time passes, everything is back up for a while, rinse, repeat.
Vimm's Lair has been asked to remove many games from The Vault on behalf of Nintendo, Sega, Lego, and the ESA. While most of these games (and the hardware to play them) haven't been sold in decades, ultimately it's their prerogative so these games are now gone for good.
