Did you download and install melonDS in a separate folder this time?
Save states work fine for me. Press Shift+F1 to save and F1 to load. Or you can use the drop down menu. File - Save state - 1

Welp, nothing I've tried has worked thus far. The game won't let me save at all on MelonDS, and I can't progress past certain points in either Melos or DesMuME. Gonna sleep on it and try again in the morning.
