How to Dump Game Cart to ROM?

Can anyone tell me how to dump a video game to a ROM?

I'm interested in original Famicom games. The Super Mario Bros. 2(Japan) ROM that I downloaded doesn't seem to have a title screen, and I assume it is just a bad dump. I'm thinking of buying the original Famicom game so I can dump it myself, and scan the excellent artwork while I'm at it. This might be completely out of my league though.

Can anyone explain the process? I imagine that I would need to purchase some hardware, and maybe learn some hacking (just writing that word intimidates me).

Please let me know, or point me in the right direction. I'm currently searching Google for some more info.
