Oh yeah, when the game first came out on Gamecube there was a cool little tidbit. You could open the Gamecube's lid and the game would still continue running since it ran on lower memory than other games on the console.
Animal Crossing was originally an N64 Japan only game, and because cartridges could barely hold anything, it had to be small.
The GameCube version is basically a port of the N64 version with translation and a few extra things, so it didn't take up much space.
