ZSNES is more popular because it kicks SNES9x's ass. I already did a big comparison post a while ago.
Anyway, to save in ZSNES is F2, F3 to choose slot, F4 to load.

If it's RockNES X you use F3 to save and choose the save state by hitting F2 and restoring it by hitting F4. If it's SNES9X you hold down Shift and press one of the F buttons to save. If you want to restore that state just hit the F button you used to save. I don't really know about ZSNES because I perfer to use SNES9X but that one seems to be the most popular...
