Are you using an emulator?

It sounds to me as if you might simply be double-clicking on the ROM (game) file as if it were a program. You need to download an emulator (Vimm's Lair has an amply adequate selection), which is a program, open that and load the ROM from within it in much the same way as you'd load a document into Word.
Also this messaage is popping up...
Windows cannot open this file:
File: Super Mario Bros. 3
To open this file, Windows needs to know what program created it. Windows can go online to look it up automatically, or you can manually select from a list of programs on your computer.
What do you want to do?
Use the web program to find the appropriate program.
Select the program from a list.
So that's another thing it says. Unfortunately I've tried bother and neither of them work. Each time I try either of them the message I said in the above post comes up. Can you help me?
Thanks.
