Problem with Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door

My friend has been playing Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door on his Wii and after chapter 4 if he tries to backtrack the game just freezes. Has anyone encountered this issue? If so let's talk about it, and if anyone has a fix that would be even better!
