They take as much space as they need - a standard DVD-ROM (which is what the PlayStation 2 uses) can hold up to 4.7GB of data. Try to convert the .iso to a compressed .chd file using the chdman utility (look it up) if you have such limited storage, which should be able to save up a few hundreds MBs or maybe a gigabyte depending on how well it can compress. Most emulators should be able to handle .chd (PCSX2 can, at least).
