The source of the intermittent ASP errors which shut down several parts of the site may have been found. A database which is very heavily used was being accessed on an old drive when it should have been moved to the new drive many months ago. All this time it has been slowly growing and chewing up massive amounts of resources whenever it's accessed. A simple compacting of the database brought it from over 5MB down to 450K and server performance has dramatically improved. Hopefully this was the cause of the problem so it shouldn't happen anymore.
