The most expensive part of running a site like this is the recurring (monthly) costs. Vimm could have the best server hardware, but it doesn't matter if he doesn't have the money for a good high-speed fiber connection. Also, setting up a GoFundMe or other conspicuous fundraising is a great way to get sued by Nintendo. The site already got a big DMCA claim and had to remove downloads for a few major IPs.
Hopefully Vimm has good financial security IRL. Myrient is going down because the guy running it couldn't afford to keep it up. He could've moved the site to cheaper infrastructure but I guess he didn't want to skimp on quality. "Quit while you're ahead" I guess.
I would love to see torrents though. Archive.org is hit or miss with torrents.
"why must the world punish people for being whimsical?"
You could set up a GoFundMe page and try to get maybe $20,000.00 for it to buy 3 or 4 new pcs to improve your setup I would donate quite a bit to that. Alternitively you could start using a torrent network for some of the larger files to help speeds.
