Re: Add torrent option

Myrient got shut down precisely *because* people were bypassing the website and downloading through hotlinks instead, which meant fewer and fewer people even knew the downloads were donation-supported and the funding for the site got choked out.
Torrents on Vimm would either be supported by Vimm's own server to keep obscure torrents alive, which would mean effectively hotlinking to files and thus taking up bandwidth while depriving Vimm of ad revenue, or they would be purely peer-to-peer and inevitably most of the obscure games would end up with zero seeders and thus defeat the point of a torrent.
There are already tons of torrents out there for retro games. If you want to torrent your games, that has been an option forever. I haven't seen a good reason for why Vimm offering torrents would improve either Vimm or the torrent scene.
I understand that the website is supported through advertisements. But there will always be some users that will use adblockers. I just dont want to see the website be shut down even though its been around for decades. Its always a possibility and if torrenting would allow it to run for less maintenance then that is a great option in my opinion.
One example I can think of is the Myrient archive which got shut down because of economical reasons and now the Minerva archive which has taken its place now exclusively uses torrenting to share it. However, Myrient was several hundreds of terabytes worth of data and im assuming Vimm isnt as large.
Perhaps if the website detects an adblocker it could recommend the user to torrent instead? Just my two cents.
