I use USB adapters. They're great because if you want to emulate a multiplayer game, you just plug another one in... or more. My favorite so far is a generic adapter that does either PS2 or N64, sounds like the one you ordered. It has a switch with 2 different color lights indicating which port you're using. Make sure you're using all the best controller plug-ins and calibrate the analog sticks.
I just bought an adapter for the PC that accepts a PS1, PS2 and N64 controllers to be used. I dont have it yet but should be here by next week. I bought it online, its worth taking a look at I suppose...
