Win7 requires 1 GB of RAM to run, and 2 GB for XP Mode (to run 32-bit programs).
Rumor has it that you can install the OS with 1 GB of RAM, remove 512 MB, and run Win7 with 512 MB of RAM. But ... why would *anyone* deliberately remove 512 MB of RAM from their machine? Their posts sure gave me a pause. :-/

That sounds like some present!
My guess would have been that Win7 would need at least 2GB RAM; I accept your assessment of 3 GB without even blinking.
Win8 is supposed to hit beta sometime in 2011. If conventional wisdom is correct, it will have even higher requirements.
