"unrecoverable error while running compiler"

While playing Legend of Legaia I've run into this message twice, midbattle, but not at the same spot. Am I just going to have to save every chance I can (even states instead of just the Memory Tree?) and see if it keeps letting me progress farther each time? So far that's been the case. Each time I restart (from the previous save) I can go a few minutes farther. Not the best way to go through a long game if I can avoid it. Thanks for the emulators and emulations!
