Last post should have read "NoScript (Firefox plug-in blocker)" and mentioned that I use 1/2 of a firewall (WinXP built in firewall only blocks incoming).
I also use this on occasion.

The other night Microsoft Automatic Update notifier interrupted my download, costing several hours of lost time before I noticed that it had dropped. Happens every month.

Yep, Avast! is what I was planning on. Two years ago I used it for a few months and had no complaints.
Since my AV subscription ran out, the only real-time protection that I've been using is NoScript (Firefox plug-in) and Spywareblaster (block-list).
