All that comes to my mind are Genesis games - "Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel" for one. It's one of the highest-quality platform games I've ever seen. - Tricob. "Glass Tiger for life! "

"unlike those other games (Final Fantasy3, Earthbound, Robotrek, Dragonquest, etc) that throw up a generic background and auto-stage the fight for you while displaying the math (yawn)."

Hehe. The type of game there you are describing is called an "RPG" (Role-Playing Game.) If you've tried one for more than a few seconds, you might like it. Most RPG's rely on a good story if you can get past the first couple hours.

The only thing that comes to mind for the type of game you want is called "Blackthorne" for SNES. Its a combination of side scrolling action and strategy. It peridically gives you save codes as you progress, and its made by Blizzard. Otherwise.... um... Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, and Contra III are as close as I can think of right nah.
