The faulty sticks are two different models of SanDisk. I can't rule out Windows flakiness as a possible cause and plan to try recovering use of them when time permits. Fortunately the data was still stored on a PC so this wasn't a much of a loss.
Some memory stick brands are better than others. My personal preference is Lexar.
