I basically only play RPGs myself, and recommendations for them on the DS is pretty simple because the handheld RPGs are in a league of their own.

Sands of Destruction
Radiant Historia
Rune Factory (all of em)
Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow (The only good DS one!)
The Final Fantasy 3 and 4 ports were great and still worth playing 
   even if you've played them on other consoles.
Infinite Space (admittedly more of a sim game?)
Mario & Luigi Partners in Time and Bowser's Inside Story
Okamiden (not a full on RPG but great if you liked the first game)
Ragnarok DS (it's a little strange to play on handheld but I played the original game when it was first released so I'm a bit biased towards this one)
Pokemon Heart gold/Soul Silver (because, duh!)
Phantasy Star 0 (this one is... weird. Which is saying something for the Phantasy Star mmo style games)
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (all of em)
Dragon Quest (Again, all of em but there's a lot of remakes)

A few non RPGs I'd recommend are things like
Metroid Prime Hunters
Metal Slug 7
Scribblenauts
Bejewled 3 (dont you judge me!)
