mega man X (SNES)

When i play this game afer the first level (little into type level) and i pick a boss to fight. I will be making my way through the level when all of a sudden ill kill an enemy and the screen fades to black. BOOM i get the ability as if i had killed the boss.. Highly annoying. I checked the reviews and stuff and no one else mentioned thier game doing this. Any help is appriciated. thanks in advance.
