I think the issue is with the MTUs and the bandwidth that Vimm’s Lair’s server allows for.
My take is that because the emulations are free, Vimm’s lair is a relatively small operation with a limited amount of bandwidth available. They limit how much data can go across the wire to ensure that their network doesn’t flood with the myriad of requests that people have for games.
