pcsxr-pgxp and Xebra are both decent alternatives. They aren't listed in the Emulation Lair so let me know if you need help finding them or installing them
Try turning Vsync off. You will probably get some screen tearing but it'll be easier on your system
With PS1 it's always a good idea to have more than one emulator installed
