No file extentions?

The other day, I downloaded a ROM of Zelda II and it wouldn't load on any of my NES emulators. I noticed that there is no file extension. I tried another ROM and it was the same. Are all the ROMs like this and how do I fix this problem? "Damn them Vikings... they rape our cows and steal our women!"
