Uh ... Awesome Possum?  If so, I remember there being a setting in the Options menu where you could select how much you wanted the dude to talk;  one of the settings  - IIRC - was called "Motormouth".

There was a game for the sega genesis that played a little bit like sonic but it wasnt, it was sort of pirate based. It was a pretty good game and I need help finding the name of it. The first boss was a big guy with a pirate sword (I think)
