Try, The Guardian Legend (NES). Available here at Vimm's.
Well, it isn't really "1942 style", more like "futuristic style", but it has overhead-flying segments and walk-around segments. Besides, it's a good game.
You are my last hope.
Many years ago I play ed an NES game that started out as you
being a spaceship shooting other ship kind of 1942 style.
There was also a part where you walk around shooting things
kind of Zelda style.
I never got very far in it and it's been a really long time.
